One of his favourite sayings was “this world is too interesting to say good-bye to.” He certainly lived life to its fullest and never hesitated to share his passion with countless others.

In his 104 years, “SPT” lived through the dynamism of the 20th and 21st centuries: two world wars, revolutions, a coup d’etat, riots, assassinations, and various cycles of economic boom and collapse. During the global turmoil of the 1960s, he decided to settle his family in Singapore, where he came to describe himself as “a proud Singaporean of Chinese descent.” This position motivated the various projects he undertook to serve as little bridges between the two nations.

His life and love of family and philanthropy is celebrated by his children, grand-children and great-grandchildren, nephews and nieces, and their families and friends—as well as colleagues from all over the world, who have been embraced as members of his extended family. His generosity is also remembered by the students sponsored by his Education Funds, which embodied his life-long conviction that learning and curiosity are the key to a better life.
